The hourly employee. The amiable. The shining freaking star. Are you that guy/girl? Let me tell you a little story about the little engine that could!!
It’s actually a story of two engines. They start at the same time and they have the same opportunity. Both of these little engines have ambitions of not being de railed. Both want to move up as soon as possible. They start down there path to fortune and glory and they get it. Both took the advice and coaching (sometimes torrential beatings) from yours truly. They made it….salaried guys. Now what comes next is always what comes next. Pass or fail. NO middle ground ever.
Engine number one takes off. He knows his role. He knows that he is now in charge of former peers that helped him get where he is today. His job is now to support these same people and possibly reach back and start developing his own padwan. He arrives early to work and he leaves as business dictates. He still calls to asks questions from time to time as a good rookie should. The people that helped bring him up have his back because he has stayed grounded. He knows the cardinal rule!!
They don’t fire the players…they fire the coach!!
So, with that in mind (and believe me it’s my biggest teaching principle) he is set in a definitive career path and on his way to fortune and glory. Probably.
Engine number 2. Same teacher…way different student. It seems inconceivable that two engines that start from the same rail yard and have the same conductor can possibly be so polar opposite. This engine has the big head. His mentality is that “I’ve made it now blow me bitch!” Not cool. Although he was taught shoulder to shoulder he refuses to lower himself to the pathetic
minions he calls workers. Ahhh, you have to have good and evil I guess. Now the guy that used to make it happen is making mistake after mistake and is setting career goals on french fry dropper guy.
You can not take a promotion and perform like a self entitled shit bag. We love that phrase here but normally reserve it for the customers that play food critic on a daily. When a company or a mom and pop promote you…well you better step up your game and stay on top of things. Put the clip board down and get your hands dirty every once in a while. Talking to people critically in front of their colleagues does not bode well with the over worked and under paid. Remember what I always say
How much shit would you put up with for 9 bucks an hour?
We now have two guys who came up together now going on two totally separate trajectories. I might add that engine one bought the book and has drank our kool-aid. He adheres to the common sense principle that lie with in the Round Table Guys E-book. It’s really that simple. You have to take care of your people even better then you take care of your top line. They both should be treated like your lively-hood because they are just that.
I will be tracking this as both guys are in different places. I hope you are as anxious to see the out come of their final destinations as I am. The Round Table guys are of course out to help and coach anyone willing to receive or word. If you would like a copy of that word please click here!!
Have a great day and stay tuned.
